Abstract
We apply the aberration balancing method of Maréchal to diffraction instruments with a symmetric pupil. To this class of instruments belong ruled and holographic diffraction gratings. We apply the theory to specific mountings; we give expressions for the comatic wavelength error of a Rowland mounting V, for the optimum focusing distance of a Wadsworth mounting and, as an example of an off-plane mounting we discuss the optimum image spread of an Eagle mounting.
