Abstract

Low cost and low power consumption of multimode links are the result of a design effort to optimize specifications for short reach. Beyond 800G front panel pluggable transceivers, linear pluggable optics (LPO) or multimode co-packaged optics (MCPO) may offer compelling solutions for 1.6T and 3.2T generations. Reliability can be enhanced with 1:1 cold sparing of VCSELs. Further progress is expected.
