Abstract
Fiber characterization in the production factory is discussed. The fiber is made by both the MCVD and VAD processes. In the characterization of the preform rod in the manufacturing process, the profile, core diameter, outer diameter, and N.A. are measured with interference microscope and profile analyzing equipment. There is no noticeable correlation between the bandwidth of a fiber estimated from the profile measured with the interference microscope and the bandwidth determined by measurement of the fiber itself (Fig. 1). At present, characterization of the preform rod is being shifted to the use of preform analyzing equipment. In the preform rod for single-mode fiber, the profile measured is used to determine beam spot size and cutoff wavelength.
