AlGaAs-on-insulator (AlGaAs-o-I) nonlinear optics takes a key step from device fundamentals towards systems deployment. This work demonstrates the performance of AlGaAs-o-I nonlinear optical elements in a telecommunications application setting, representing a crucial advance from fundamental device development towards deployment in network systems. Recently, high quality AlGaAs-o-I waveguides with sub-micron cross-sectional dimensions have been demonstrated with low optical loss and efficient non-linear performance, delivering on the long heralded potential of the AlGaAs material platform for all-optical signal processing. The authors demonstrate high-data rate pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM3/PAM4) multicasting in the C-band using a simple fiber coupled waveguide chip. This is a clear indication of the utility of the hybrid material platform, and the route towards integration of chip-scale nonlinear optics in real optical signal processing systems.
