A 3D light field display with 36 times more resolution than its 2D LCD panel. Light field display allows to project 3D images using the integral imaging principle. Usually, the 3rd dimension is reproduced at the expense of the 2D resolution. This means a display panel with an extremely high pixel density is needed to obtain both good lateral and depth resolutions. To get around this requirement, YoungJin Jo et al. used a focus-tunable lens in their integral imaging system to increase the resolution. Doing so, the authors were able to demonstrate a final 3D image that reproduces full-parallax and has a resolution that is 36 times better than the original LCD panel. The authors hope that this system will inspire further developments for large-scale 3D displays.
