Editors select a limited number of articles that have broad appeal, are enjoyable to read, and showcase the scope of material published in OSA's journals. The topic categories highlighted in a given month will vary by journal.
Because Spotlight papers are open access (OA) and in keeping with the Spotlight concept, only 1–2 papers per journal will be selected.

Yes. Authors are notified of selection prior to online publication.
Spotlight content will be housed in OSA Publishing and its archives in perpetuity. The Spotlight article will be displayed prominently for 30 days and then be accessible as part of the Spotlight archive.
In addition to appearing on the Spotlight web site, the selected article will be marked with a Spotlight icon wherever the article appears in OSA Publishing (e.g., in search results, in source table of contents, in source abstract page).
Spotlight is a virtual product—a compilation of papers across various categories from OSA's diverse publication set. However, services such as RSS feed are available for Spotlight.
A Spotlight paper should be cited as it appeared in the originating journal.
