Recent Developments in Light-Emitting Diode Technology and Applications

Submission Open: 15 September 2016
Submission Deadline: 15 November 2016

Light-emitting diode (LED) technology has advanced considerably over the last few decades, yet many device physics mechanisms remain not well understood, and performances at certain wavelengths (especially deep ultraviolet, as well as the green wavelength regime) leave much room for improvement. This special issue of original research articles will focus on all aspects of light-emitting diode (LED) technology. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Advances in luminous efficacy of LED based lighting systems
  • Improvement in efficiency of light generation in the “green gap” regime
  • Experimental and theoretical work behind detailed Auger mechanisms in GaInN
  • Radiative and transport properties in high-InN mole fraction GaInN
  • New active region materials for visible-spectrum emitters, especially in green to red regime
  • Down-conversion materials and application to lighting and displays
  • Advanced device techniques (e.g., tunnel junction devices)
  • Advanced growth techniques (beyond standard metal-organic chemical vapor deposition)
  • Understanding mechanisms reducing internal quantum efficiencies at elevated temperature
  • Nanostructured materials and devices
  • Advanced in deep ultraviolet LEDs (U-VB and U-VC) and their applications
  • Infrared LEDs and applications
  • MicroLEDs for displays and augmented reality
  • LEDs for communication (LIFI)
  • LED modeling: electrical and optical properties
  • Novel substrates (InGaN FS)
  • Reliability issues for LEDs (device physics, as well as lumen and color maintenance)

Manuscripts must be prepared according to the usual standards for submission to Photonics Research; see the Information for Contributors in any printed issue or the OSA Style Guide. Manuscripts must be uploaded through OSA's electronic submission system. Please specify that the manuscript is for the Light-Emitting Diode Technology and Applications feature issue (choose from the feature issue drop-down menu). Manuscripts will undergo the same peer review as other papers submitted to the journal. The standard Photonics Research article processing charges will apply.
