Depiction of an all-optical switch using oxygen-deprived aluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO). An ultraviolet laser pulse excites electrons into the conduction band of AZO temporarily modifying the optical properties felt by a second laser beam, thereby producing large changes in the refractive index of the film and an ultrafast response.
