Nonreciprocal Optics within a Wavelength Fraction

Abstract

Reciprocity in optics-the invariance of a light-matter interaction to the reversal of time-is a key principle in electrodynamics. This symmetry can be broken in the presence of magnetization, making the light propagation along forward and backward directions no longer invariant. Magneto-optical polarization rotation in the Faraday effect is a prominent example of this broken symmetry in optics.
