THE AUTHORS BRIEFLY HIGHLIGHT OPTICAL TECHNIQUES AVAILABLE FOR BIODIAGNOSTICS, DESCRIBE THE DIFFICULTY OF TISSUE SCATTERING WHICH LIMITS THEIR APPLICATION TO TISSUES, AND FINALLY DESCRIBE ONE APPROACH THAT CIRCUMVENTS THIS DIFFICULTY: FLUORESCENCE LIFETIME OF ENDOGENOUS (NATIVE) OR EXOGENOUS (ARTIFICIALLY INTRODUCED) COMPOUNDS FOR METABOLIC MONITORING.
