Optical Materials Express Feature Announcement

Multimaterial and Multifunctional Optical Fibers

Submission Opens:15 December 2016

Submission Deadline: 1 February 2017

Optical Materials Express is planning a feature issue on Advanced Multimaterial and Multifunctional Optical Fibers. Original articles related to the field of multimaterial and multifunctional fibers are encouraged.

Optical fibers have shown great potential in several application fields, ranging from telecom to high-power lasers, from lighting to structural health monitoring. For several years optical fibers were mostly fabricated starting from a single class of materials, either inorganic glass or polymer, and a second material was included within the fabrication process but mostly for protection purposes (i.e. polymide coating). In the last decade, however, a few pioneering works have begun exploring the opportunities of combining different materials into one single optical fiber. Polymers, inorganic glasses, metals, and semiconductors have been explored, and their combination resulted in unprecedented properties and functionalities, thus paving the way to a new world of applications.

This special issue will highlight the most recent results in the field of multimaterial optical fibers, including new materials, new processes, and new functionalities. Contributions on applications of novel or existing multimaterial fibers are also welcome, especially highlighting the opportunities offered by multifunctionality in optical fibers, or the advantages of fiber configuration with respect to current technologies.

All papers need to present original, previously unpublished work, and will be subject to the normal standards and peer-review process of the journal. Papers will appear in the Optical Materials Express journal and will be published online upon acceptance. Please note that submissions to this feature issue incur the normal OMEx publication fee.

Manuscripts must be prepared according to the usual standards for submission to Optical Materials Express and must be uploaded through OSA's electronic submission system. When submitting, please specify that the manuscript is for the Multimaterial and multifunctional optical fibers feature issue (choose from the drop-down menu).
