Abstract

The first known measurements of the temperature dependence of the homogeneous linewidth of optical transitions of an actinide ion are reported. The system studied is Np3+ in LaCl3. The results are discussed in terms of one-and two-phonon processes. The magnitudes of the linewidths are comparable with those observed in lanthanide ions.
