Abstract

Ultraviolet laser action has been obtained from a 5d–4f transition in Ce3+-doped LaF3. The 286-nm wavelength obtained is the shortest of any solid-state laser. The approximate potential tuning range is from 275 to 315 nm.

Ultraviolet absorption and spontaneous emission of a 700-μm-thick LaF3 crystal with 0.05 at. % Ce3+ doping. For both spectra the crystal c axis was oriented perpendicularly to the direction of observation. The KrF pump source and Ce:LaF3 laser wavelengths are indicated. The Ce3+ energy levels giving rise to the spectra are shown in the inset.
