Abstract

We have studied the characteristics of nonparaxial abruptly autofocusing beams (AABs) with structured polarization states. Based on the relationship between rays and their pre-engineered circular caustics, the closed-form Fourier spectra of these beams are derived, and their electric fields are represented by the superposition of polarized plane waves. The simulation results show that such structured autofocusing beams have various shapes of focal spots, including dot-like, doughnut-like, and other array-like focal spots, which depend on the polarization state of beams. Moreover, for the AABs with a high numerical aperture, the radii of the focal spots are smaller than one wavelength, and their focal spots exhibit sub-wavelength structures.
