Abstract

The third harmonic of CO2-laser radiation has been obtained by passing the laser beam through two CdGeAs2 crystals in tandem, with the first crystal oriented for second-harmonic generation and the second for sum mixing. Using this technique, we have achieved an average external conversion efficiency of 1.5%, corresponding to an average internal conversion efficiency of 3% and peak-power efficiency near 6%. A brief comparison with other methods of generating the third harmonic of CO2-laser radiation is given.
