Abstract

We implement the ROSE protocol in an erbium-doped solid, compatible with the telecom range. The ROSE scheme is an adaptation of the standard two-pulse photon echo to make it suitable for a quantum memory. We observe a retrieval efficiency of 40% for a weak laser pulse in the forward direction by using specific orientations of the light polarizations, magnetic field, and crystal axes.

The error bars essentially come from shot-to-shot fluctuations that we attribute to the laser fluctuations. The data are averaged over a few seconds. The typical deviation of shot-to-shot fluctuations gives the error bar for both the efficiency and αL (from SHB). The solid lines (green and red) represent the fit to theoretical formulas (see text for details). The point corresponding to Fig. 2 is circled.
