Abstract

We propose theoretically and demonstrate experimentally white-light whispering gallery mode resonators. These resonators have essentially a continuous modal spectrum accompanied by ultrahigh-Q frequency-independent quality factors. Applications of the resonators for ringdown spectroscopy and light modulation are discussed.

(Color online) White-light fiber coupled whispering gallery mode resonator. The resonator is thick ( 500 μ m ) , which results in the coexistence of various mode families in the same geometrical volume in the vicinity of the rim of the resonator. The continuous spectrum of the resonator is achieved because the fiber coupler is slightly tilted with respect to the center of the rim of the resonator to maximize interaction with all the modes.
