Abstract

A new concept is introduced whereby thermal stresses generated through the pumping process are canceled by an applied force. By use of a Nd:YVO<sub>4</sub> disk laser as a model system, significant reduction of thermal lensing and deformation is demonstrated as a function of applied pressure, and the output power (19 W TEM<sub>00</sub>) is limited only by the available pump power.
