Abstract

We report strong lasing in zinc on the neonlike 3p → 3s, J = 0 → 1 transition at 21.2 nm when the prepulse technique of using a low-intensity prepulse before the main optical drive pulse is used with the 1.315-μm Asterix laser to illuminate the zinc target. Without the use of the prepulse, this line is not visible. The usual J = 2 → 1 lines at 26.2 and 26.7 nm are observed weakly both with and without the use of the prepulse. By variation of the prepulse energy, we demonstrate that even a very weak prepulse with less than 0.1% of the main pulse energy can enable the zinc to lase at 21.2 nm.

Schematic of the setup used on the Asterix laser to generate a prepulse. Part of the Asterix beam is reflected off mirror M1, goes through neutral-density filters, and then is reflected off mirror M2, which recombines the prepulse beam collinearly, but time delayed by 5 ns, with the main beam. Both beams are focused onto the target by the array of cylindrical lenses.

On-axis, time-integrated spectra from 2.5-cm-long zinc targets illuminated with the Asterix laser for the two cases, with and without the use of a 7.8% prepulse before the main optical drive pulse. When the prepulse technique is used, the J = 0 → 1 laser line at 21.2 nm appears strongly and saturates the spectrometer. A 0.8-μm-thick aluminum filter was used to attenuate the spectra.

On-axis, time-integrated spectra of the J = 0 → 1 laser line at 21.2 nm from 2.5-cm-long zinc targets illuminated with the Asterix laser for different prepulse energies that vary from 0.086% to 7.8% of the main beam energy. The prepulse delay is kept constant at 5 ns. The laser output is strongest for the 2.1% prepulse case and decreases by a factor of 30 for the 0.086% prepulse case. Two aluminum filters, 0.8 and 1.5 μm thick, were used to attenuate the spectra.
