Squared index profile n12(x) versus x for various choices of the coefficients {cm}. In curves a to e the cm's are varied progressively to merge the individual peaks present in a to a single one in e. Note that, although a single peak has already been achieved in d, further variation of the cm's is required to attain the symmetrically disposed peak in e.
