Abstract

It is shown that a new class of radially symmetric nonlinear waves exists in an optical fiber with a third-order, optical Kerr-effect nonlinearity. The fiber has a circular cross section, and the field solutions are obtained from a scalar-wave equation that excludes any azimuthal coordinate dependence. It is assumed that the fiber has a linear core and a nonlinear cladding. The new waves create self-focused rings of energy flowing parallel to the fiber. A brief discussion of the numerical investigations is given together with results that are instructively compared with those expected for an equivalent planar guiding structure.
