Abstract

By coupling a cw GaAlAs-diode laser to an external resonator with Fabry–Perot etalons as dispersive elements, emission was reduced to a single-axial mode of 32-MHz width. The wavelength could be coarsely tuned over a spectral range of over 10 nm. Fine tuning over about 500 MHz was achieved by varying the external cavity length by less than λ/3. At single-axial-mode operation, the commonly observed high- and low-frequency self-pulsing of the light output was found to disappear almost completely.

Dynamic behavior of the laser emission. The trace 0 gives the zero-reference level. Trace a corresponds to the self-pulsing light emission as the diode is coupled to the external cavity without dispersive elements. Trace b shows the stabilized light output at single-axial-mode operation as the Fabry–Perot etalon pair FP1 and FP2 has been introduced into the cavity. The pumping current is the same (J = 1.07 Jt) for traces a and b.
