Abstract

The interaction of 100-fs Ti:sapphire laser pulses with thin foil targets was experimentally investigated at intensities exceeding 1018 W/cm2. High harmonics were observed in transmission through an overdense plasma in the direction of the incident beam. From the cutoff frequency of the harmonics an electron density of 1×1024 cm-3 is inferred, indicating a compression of the plasma by the ponderomotive force of the laser pulse.

From the left a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulse is focused to an intensity of Iλ21018 W cm-2 µm2 onto a thin polycarbonate foil with a thickness of 70–150 nm at two distinct angles of incidence (45° and 0°). Odd and even high-order harmonics are generated in the foil, and the radiation transmitted through the overdense plasma is subsequently detected by a soft-x-ray spectrograph.
