Abstract
The mode locking of a Ti:Al2O3 laser with a moving extracavity mirror is described. With no active mode-locking element and with no nonlinear element in the external cavity, pulses of less than 40 psec have been directly generated from a cw laser. A possible mechanism for this novel mode-locking technique is discussed.
