Dense, nonlinear multicomponent media: when near dipole-dipole interactions are significant due to high density of two-level atoms, local-field effects associated with the presence of an optically linear material component, i. e., a dielectric host medium, lead to local-field enhancement of the near dipole-dipole interaction, local cooperative decays, and coherence exchange processes. [See article by Michael E. Crenshaw, Kay U. Sullivan and Charles M. Bowden for details.]
