Fabrication of MIR lasers based on stable, non-toxic, and non-hygroscopic chalcogenide glasses. Fibers have been drawn from gallium and lanthanum sulfides with the molar composition 70Ga2S3:30La2S3 (GLS), and 70Ga2S3:30La2O3 (GLSO). Potential applications include compact and rugged sources for gas sensing, atmospheric transmission, and medical applications. See article by T. Schweizer, D.J. Brady and D.W. Hewak, page 102.
