Abstract

This paper describes a new submersible device for measuring the light-attenuation index of sea water and an algorithm for calibrating it by means of a specially developed calibration device. Results are given for a measurement of the depth distributions of the attenuation index, temperature, and salinity in the Barents and Black Seas and the connection of the measured attenuation index with the transparency of the water according to a Secchi disk.
