Abstract

This paper shows that the requirements on the precision of the rectilinearity of the displacement of the movable mirror of a scanning Michelson interferometer can be made less stringent if a symmetric scanning regime is used for which the zero path difference of the interferogram signal coincides with a mirror position that is neutral relative to the beginning and end of the scanning.
