This paper reports an experimental study of the refractive index of dense mercury vapor at the lasing wavelength of a XeCl* laser, 308 nm. It is established that the refractive index varies in accordance with the Lorentz-Lorenz formula in the range of mercury-vapor concentrations 1.2×10<sup>18</sup> -1.8×10<sup>19</sup> cm<sup>−3</sup>. The results of the measurements are presented in the form of a graph of the refractive index (n<sub>p</sub>−1)×10<sup>4</sup> vs the mercury-vapor concentration.
