Abstract

This paper presents analytic expressions and proposes a technique for calculating the birefringence in items of complex shape made from optically uniaxial crystals. The results of a calculation of the birefringence are given for crystals of synthetic sapphire and magnesium fluoride for the visible and IR regions.
