Abstract

A short review of liquid crystal compounds with a low birefringence and ordinary refractive index is presented. Special attention is given to alkylcyclohexylalkyl carbonates, which belong to a family of LCs having high clearing point temperatures, low viscosity, and <i>n</i>o as low as 1.442. Examples of multicomponent mixtures with positive and negative dielectric anisotropy are described. © 2005 Optical Society of America
