This paper presents a version of the Monte Carlo method for modeling the propagation of optical radiation in scattering biological media, based on the use of the Green's function of the response of the medium to a single external action. The algorithm makes it possible to take into account the multilayer nature of the medium, the finite size of the incident beam, and the reflection and refraction of light at the boundaries between the layers. The results of a calculation of the total irradiance distribution in biological tissue are presented. The thermal conductivity equation is solved by means of the finite-element method, and the temperature field that appears when a biological material is illuminated by low-intensity laser radiation is calculated. © 2005 Optical Society of America
