Abstract

This paper discusses the results of a magnetooptic experiment carried out at T=78 K. Electromagnetic laser radiation (lambda = 10.6 µm) propagates in the gap between two translationally symmetric single crystals of the semimetal bismuth. The dependences are obtained for the intensity of the electromagnetic radiation transmitted through the system being studied (a planar waveguide), which lies in a magnetic field. The transmittance of a planar waveguide with walls made from an anisotropic material is studied. The observed magnetooptic oscillations are interpreted as interband and intraband allowed and forbidden transitions of electrons on the Landau levels of the valence band and conduction band. The complete set of parameters is found for the electron energy spectrum of bismuth at T=78 K. © 2004 Optical Society of America
