Abstract

This paper discusses the features of the transmission of light by smectic-A liquid crystals (SmALCs). The spectral dependences are obtained for the intensity and the angular distribution of the radiation transmitted through homeotropic and confocal SmALC structures. The optical-loss mechanism in a liquid-crystal medium is discussed. The results of the study can be used to optimize the electrooptic characteristics of color-transmitting LCs of projection displays with a memory function.
