Abstract

The thulium doped optical amplifier is the optical amplification solution for the S-band (1460–1530 nm). In this paper, the ${{\rm ZrF}_4} {-} {{\rm BaF}_2} {-} {{\rm LaF}_3} {-} {{\rm AlF}_3} {-} {\rm NaF}$ based thulium doped optical amplifier for S-band optical amplification is studied for observing the effect of variation in doping radius and doping concentration on the gain. Also, the scenarios with 1050 nm and 1050 nm $+$ 1400 nm $+$ 800 nm pumping are analyzed. The doping concentration is varied in the range of $20 \times 10^{24}\;{\rm m}^{- 3}$ to $80 \times 10^{24}\;{\rm m}^{- 3}$, and the doping radius is varied in the range of 0.3 µm to 1.3 µm. From the obtained results, it has been observed that the doping parameters have a significant effect on the gain of the thulium doped optical amplifier. The peak gain of 30.5 dB is observed for the 1050 nm $+$ 1400 nm $+$ 800 nm pumping of the thulium doped optical amplifier having a doping concentration of $40 \times 10^{24}\;{\rm m}^{- 3}$ and doping radius of 0.9 µm.
