Abstract

The first and most important phase in optical-system design—the structural and size synthesis of the initial designs of optical systems—is examined. The search for the structure and size parameters of the initial design of the optical system was performed based on Gaussian optics and aberration theory. We impose necessary conditions on design parameters to ensure that the design conforms to the design specification and is a solution to the synthesis problem. The best solution was selected using several criteria and a target function. We describe several examples for synthesis of the structure and size designs for two types of variable objectives. We discuss the formal description of the synthesis process used to obtain the initial optical-system designs.
