Abstract
To prevent nonlinear distortions of images being amplified in a saturated laser amplifier of a projection system, the active medium of the amplifier is placed in the Fourier plane of the image, while the directional pattern of the beam that illuminates the image to be projected and the gain profile in the active medium of the amplifier are formed so as to take into account the magnitude and number of the resolution elements of the image to be amplified. Criteria are presented for choosing the directional pattern and the gain profile, and it is shown that the radiance of the images can be correctly amplified with an energy-output efficiency of the amplifying medium above 70%. © 2005 Optical Society of America
