Abstract
Use is made of near-resonance electronic Raman scattering to measure the radial density distribution of Hg(6 3P1) in a low-pressure Hg–Ar dc discharge. The intermediate and final states used are 7 3S1 and 6 3P2, respectively. The detuning Δ from the intermediate state is kept small (3–12 cm−1) in order to boost the Raman cross section enough to get a strong signal from this sparsely populated (~1011 cm−3) excited state. Absolute densities are determined by measuring the Raman signal from a known amount of H2, given the relative Raman cross sections for the two systems. The depolarization ratio ρ = σzx/σzz is also measured and found to agree with theory. Results for the radial density distribution compare well with those obtained earlier with a different method.
