Abstract
Closed-form solutions for the frequency-dependent polarizability of an electron bound by a zero-range potential in N dimensions are obtained for N < 4. Some effects of dimensionality can be separated from those of dynamics, and implications for the validity of one-dimensional atomic models are drawn. Expansion of the polarizability in powers of ω−1/2 as ω → ∞ gives a binding correction to the free-electron value, which is similar in some cases to that encountered in Rydberg series.
