Abstract
We summarize the theoretical reasons for believing that far-infrared radiation in the 5–100-cm−1 range can influence ligand recombination in heme proteins. We explicitly use the nonadiabatic model to discuss both electronic and vibrational matrix elements. We present the results of our experiment carried on at the University of California, Santa Barbara, free-electron laser in which we observed a modification of the recombination of carbon monoxide with myoglobin at low temperatures due to 50.5-cm−1 irradiation.
