Abstract
We present a nonperturbative model for the above-threshold ionization (ATI) of a hydrogen atom that does not contain any adjustable parameters. The multichannel rate equations are derived for the full free–free matrix elements consisting of two parts: a smooth off-diagonal part and a singular diagonal one. The corrections from the diagonal couplings, ignored in earlier work, are approximately accounted for. The resulting model remains reliable up to laser intensities of ∝ 1012 W/cm2. The diagonal couplings tend to increase the content of higher angular momenta in the ATI peaks.
