Abstract

It is shown that off-diagonal elements of the photon density matrix of a single-mode cavity field can be determined by using test atoms that are initially prepared in a coherent superposition of the two states interacting with the cavity mode. In particular, this makes it possible to test the cavity field with respect to squeezing.
