Abstract
We consider a patterned multilayer structure composed of a one-dimensional (1D) grating placed on a truncated 1D photonic crystal. We study the guided mode arising from the interaction between the grating and the Bloch surface wave supported by the multilayer as a function of the grating geometrical parameters. We investigate the dispersion relation as well as the field distribution associated with the guided mode by means of rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA). In addition, we propose a numerical approach based on an effective index approximation for a fast calculation of the dispersion relation. We verify the limits and the accuracy of this strategy by comparing the results with those obtained using RCWA. We believe these findings may prove fruitful in the study and development of integrated optics based on Bloch surface waves with applications ranging from optical sensing to the control of the light–matter interaction.
