Abstract

The even-parity np[1/2]1 and np[3/2]1 autoionizing Rydberg series in xenon have been studied to n = 17 by one-photon laser spectroscopy from the metastable 6s[1/2]0 state in an atomic beam. Accurate position and width data have been obtained, and we have also studied possible line-broadening mechanisms. The question of the appropriate line shape in this multichannel stituation is discussed.
