Abstract

Most of the recently discovered superconductors, like all cuprates, MgB2, or NaxCoO2nH2O, are uniaxial crystals with metallic ab planes orthogonal to an insulating, or sometimes poorly conducting, c axis. The reflectivity Rab(ω) provides, through the optical conductivity σab(ω), valuable information on the low-energy electrodynamics of these intriguing materials. However, in the far infrared, Rab(ω)1 and a slight contamination from the c-axis response or an unsuitable choice of the extrapolation to ω=0 may lead to large errors on σab(ω). These issues are quantitatively discussed here with particular regard to La2xSrxCuO4+y, one of the most-studied high-Tc materials.

Reflectivity of a mosaic of coplanar, flux-grown single crystals of Na 0.57 CoO 2 ; it does not show any imprint of the c-axis phonon at 300 cm 1 (see Ref. [9]). The strong feature above 500 cm 1 is a phonon of the ab plane.

Reflectivity, in the normal phase at 50 K, of La 1.88 Sr 0.12 CuO 4 obtained with different experimental configurations. In part a, R ab (thick solid curve, from Ref. [6]) and R c (thin solid curve, present work) as measured on the ac(bc) surface by use of a polyethylene and a KRS-5 polarizer. Their efficiency η is reported on the right scale by a dotted curve and a dashed gray curve, respectively, in the ranges where they were employed. The dip in R ab from the c axis is due to a reduced efficiency of the polyethylene device above 300 cm 1 , which does not affect the observation of the peak in σ 1 ab ( ω ) , reported in Ref. [6] and shown in the inset. In part b, R ab is measured on the ab surface of the same crystal as in part a, by unpolarized radiation. A θ 1 ° miscut, as determined by the procedure of Fig. 2, causes a slight c-axis leakage. In part c, R ab is measured on the same ab face as in part b, but with the radiation field orthogonal to the miscut and by using the polyethylene polarizer below 250 cm 1 .

Maximum misalignment θ max between the electric field of the radiation and the ab plane of a cuprate that can be tolerated according to Eq. (7), as a function of ω. The data of Fig. 1 were used in this example. The inset shows the setup used for measuring the miscut angle θ. The sample is mounted on a four-circle diffractometer to align the c axis in the χ circle. The normal to the surface, identified by the laser reflection, makes a precession under a sample rotation by ϕ. By adjusting the sample holder until no precession is observed, the surface normal is brought in the χ circle. Then, by varying θ until the Bragg peak is observed again, the miscut angle θ is determined.
