Abstract

Coherent, narrow-band, tunable radiation in the extreme-ultraviolet spectral region was generated by a two-photon resonantly enhanced four-wave mixing process in krypton. Sum-generated radiation was produced near 942, 928, and 923 A with power efficiencies as high as 10−5. Difference-generated radiation near 1312 Å was also detected.

Fig. 2

The laser driving system for XUV generation. XUV output was in various regions between 922 and 943 Å.

Fig. 3
Fig. 3

XUV generating cell and detection apparatus. The rotating disk separates the krypton generating cell from the experimental region. The generated radiation was used to study autoionizing resonances of xenon in the ionization chamber.

Fig. 5
Fig. 5

Phase mismatch/atom versus wavenumber for four-wave mixing in krypton (cross-hatched areas are regions of negative dispersion). Note that ordinate axis is logarithmic.

Fig. 6
Fig. 6

Plot of the xenon ionization/XUV intensity versus XUV wave number ( ν ¯ ) for the 5 p 6 1 S 0 5 p 5 17 s ( 1 / 2 ) 1 ° resonance in the xenon autoionization spectrum (raw data). A computer fit to the curve yielded a FWHM cross-sectional linewidth of about 0.58 cm−1. This width is a convolution of the predicted linewidth of 0.51 cm−1, a laser bandwidth of 0.30 cm−1, and a Doppler width of 0.11 cm−1.

Fig. 7
Fig. 7

XUV intensity versus UV (two-photon resonant at ω1) intensity: slope = 1.54, I(ω4) versus I(ω1). This particular plot is for the case λ4 = 942.32 Å.

Fig. 8
Fig. 8

XUV intensity versus IR (tunable wavelength at ω2) intensity: I(ω4) versus I(ω2) with I(ω1) fixed. This plot is also for the case λ4 = 942.32 Å.

Fig. 9
Fig. 9

XUV intensity versus krypton pressure: I(ω4)/[I(ω1)2/I(ω2)] versus PKr.This plot was taken for λ4 = 942.32 Å. Theoretical fit: function A 1 P Kr 4 exp ( A 2 P Kr ) versus PKr.
