Pattern formation due to interballoon spatial mode coupling

Abstract

We analyze new types of transverse interactions in nonlinear-optical systems with a Kerr slice and diffractive feedback. Results demonstrate that interactions between the most unstable modes that have wave vectors belonging to different mode instability bands (interballoon interactions) cause the formation of new types of patterns. Mode amplitude equations for these patterns that account for interactions between these patterns are obtained. Analysis of amplitude equations is confirmed by numerical simulation.
