Abstract

Thermal fixing of photorefractive holograms in KTa1-xNbxO3 is discussed. Charge compensation was observed near 90 °C in crystals containing sufficient protons. The compensating secondary carriers were confirmed to be optically inactive. The temperature dependence of the lifetime was found to be closely related to the proton concentration. A grating formed by the secondary carriers is expected to last at least 6 days at 25 °C even when exposed to light.
