Abstract
We consider photorefractive grating formation by short light pulses in transparent piezoelectric crystals. Solutions are obtained for the time behavior of the space-charge field and elastic displacements at a time interval that is much shorter than the time of the Maxwell relaxation. The contribution of the piezoelectric and the elasto-optic effects to the dielectric impermeability tensor changes of the crystal at the light frequency arising from the grating fields is taken into account. Our numerical results show that the magnitude of the acoustic waves generated during photorefractive grating formation is substantial for GaAs and negligible for Bi12SiO20. We also consider the orientation dependence of the coupling factor of the two optical waves at the grating vector lying in the (110) plane of GaAs.
