Optical absorption in nitrogen due to spontaneous Raman scattering

Abstract

The optical absorption that is due to spontaneous rotational and vibrational Raman scattering in molecular nitrogen is calculated as a function of wavelength and temperature. At a wavelength of 500 nm and standard temperature and pressure, Raman scattering results in an absorption coefficient of 1.67 × 10−11 cm−1, approximately five times smaller than the current experimental detection limit.
